A rare medieval exhibit is now on display at the Chemnitz mining exhibition "Silberglanz & Kumpeltod". According to the State Museum of Archaeology, a 500-year-old book illustration shows all the steps involved in mining at that time.
The painting was presented to the museum on Monday by lenders from Kutna Hora (Kuttenberg) in the Czech Republic. It will be on display from January 7 to March 3. For conservation reasons, it cannot be exhibited permanently, the museum explained. During the remaining time, a high-quality facsimile will be presented in the exhibition.
The hand-painted book decoration is approximately DIN A2 in size and probably comes from a master workshop in Prague. The museum compared the depiction to a hidden object picture showing various work processes of the medieval mining, metallurgy and coinage industries.
The exhibition "Silberglanz & Kumpeltod" can be seen until June 29. It is part of the Chemnitz Capital of Culture 2025 program.
