SC Magdeburg remain in the race to defend their title in the German Handball League. The German champions won the catch-up game from the 17th matchday against HC Erlangen 30:19 (14:9) in front of 6,600 spectators in the sold-out Getec Arena. Philipp Weber was the best scorer with seven goals, while goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez stood out with 15 saves.
The visitors got off to a sluggish start and Magdeburg exploited that to take an early lead, even though the club from the city on the Elbe was far from successful in the opening minutes (5:1/8th). The visitors worked their way into the game, in particular through former Magdeburg player Maciej Gebala on the circle, and reduced the deficit to two goals at one stage. The SCM struggled in attack as the game wore on, repeatedly getting caught out by Erlangen's attentive defense. Nevertheless, the favorites had a clear lead at the break.
Magdeburg extended its lead after the break, also because goalkeeper Hernandez repeatedly made saves (17:10/34). Erlangen had nothing more to add, while the club from the city on the Elbe routinely reeled off its program and recorded a clear victory. After the cup weekend, SCM will welcome TVB Stuttgart for the next Bundesliga clash.
