Colds, coughs, fever and aching limbs - respiratory infections are on the rise in Saxony. Coronaviruses continue to dominate the flu season - with consequences.

During the fall vacations, the number of reported cases of respiratory infections in Saxony continued to rise. According to the latest report from the State Investigation Institute (LUA), the number of corona cases in particular increased by a total of 1,853, with 1,031 cases added in the second week of the vacations alone, an increase of 25 percent. And there were three more deaths. This means that a total of three women and four men between the ages of 46 and 92 have died as a result of coronavirus infection since the official start of the season at the beginning of October - the youngest had several previous illnesses.

Coronavirus still on the rise

According to the LUA, Sars-CoV-2 continues to clearly dominate among the currently detected pathogens, with cases mostly being registered in older adults and senior citizens. In contrast to the previous week, there were no reports of influenza viruses or infections caused by respiratory syncytial (RS) viruses. The number of registered coronavirus infections increased to 2,503 - while a total of 57 cases of influenza and 31 RSV infections have been reported so far.
