Colds, coughs, fever and aching limbs: it's flu season in Saxony. The number of respiratory infections is rising - but influenza viruses continue to play only a minor role.

In Saxony, the number of registered cases of respiratory infections continues to rise. According to the latest report from the State Investigation Institute (LUA), the number of reported coronavirus cases increased in particular - by 822 cases and thus 27 percent compared to the previous week. There were also two more deaths. This means that a total of one woman and three men between the ages of 82 and 92 have died as a result of coronavirus infection since the official start of the season at the beginning of October.

According to the LUA, Sars-CoV-2 clearly dominates among the pathogens currently detected, with cases mostly being registered in older adults and senior citizens. There are far fewer reports of influenza viruses or infections caused by respiratory syncytial (RS) viruses. The total number of registered coronavirus infections so far is 1467, while 37 cases of influenza and 22 RSV infections have been reported.
