Massive cost increases are exacerbating the economic situation of Saxony's hospitals. As the federal government is not closing the gaps for the time being, the Free State is stepping in - for stability.

Saxony's hospitals will receive additional flat-rate funding of 20 million euros this year. According to the Ministry of Health in Dresden, the state parliament's budget and finance committee has approved the corresponding cabinet decision from June. The urgently needed funds will be allocated to the Sächsische Aufbaubank and then disbursed - without the need for a new application.

This will fill gaps that are causing massive cost increases in the hospitals' coffers and will not be closed by the federal government for the time being, said Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping (SPD). The state government is stepping in to strengthen the liquidity of the facilities. They would be able to use the money quickly, promptly and directly for upcoming smaller investments and measures, eliminating the need for a bureaucratic and lengthy application and review process.

Hospitals in a difficult situation

According to the ministry, the economic situation of hospitals has worsened over the last two years due to higher energy prices, wage increases for staff and a continuing decline in cases. "The pending federal hospital reform will not strengthen hospitals economically until 2025 at the earliest." The additional funding is intended to stabilize the situation until then. Since reunification, over 6.5 billion euros have been invested in Saxony's hospital landscape - the most recent annual flat-rate funding amounted to 75 million euros and individual funding to 64 million euros.
