The late frosts in spring had already caught flowering fruit trees cold. As a result, the apple harvest in Saxony was catastrophic. The association reacts.

After extreme frost damage and expected massive crop failures, there will be no festive opening of the apple season in Saxony this year. "We are now concentrating on finding solutions with the responsible authorities and ministries in order to secure the existence of our fruit-growing businesses," said the Saxony & Saxony-Anhalt Fruit Growers' Association. The association has already started talks with politicians.

The association speaks of an "unprecedented crisis" and expects a yield of around ten percent compared to the previous year. Last year, 56,650 apples were harvested in Saxony. This year, the forecast is 5,800 tons. In view of the difficult times, the association is asking consumers to pay particular attention to regional products and to support local producers wherever possible.
