Several associations in Saxony and Thuringia have received funding from Berlin for the purchase of special drone technology to save fawns. Ten applications for funding from Saxony and nine applications from Thuringia have been approved, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture announced in Berlin. Nothing was paid out for Saxony-Anhalt.
The money can be used by district hunting associations to purchase thermal imaging technology. These drones can be used to find fawns, for example, as well as other animals seeking shelter in the tall grass. The young deer can then be picked up from the fields shortly before the combine harvester is used. This prevents them from falling victim to the knives of the combine harvester. Fawns in particular do not flee from danger, but instead press themselves flat against the ground.
The Federal Ministry received 501 applications for funding for drones from all over Germany. 483 of these were approved. A total of 1.84 million euros was involved.
