The Kirnitzsch river in Saxon Switzerland is to become more animal-friendly. A weir in the river near Bad Schandau will therefore be dismantled by the end of September, as announced by the state dam administration. The aim is to make the water in the popular Kirnitzschtal valley once again passable for fish and other aquatic life.
In order to compensate for the height difference of around 80 centimetres, the gradient is to be increased by 55 meters and adapted to the natural gradient. A low-water channel and two fish shelters are also to be built. The costs of around 500,000 euros will be borne by the Free State of Saxony.
