The production halls at Bombastus-Werke smell like the Mediterranean again these days. This is because the harvest of aromatic sage leaves is in full swing. Business is booming.

Bombastus-Werke AG in Freital near Dresden is experiencing growing demand for sage tea. Last year, around 213,500 packs from its own cultivation were sold to end consumers, almost a quarter more than in the previous year, the company reports. Just over half were sold as loose tea, while around 92,000 packs contained sage tea in filter bags.

The cultivation of the sage plant and its processing are at the heart of the natural remedy manufacturer. According to Bombastus, it is one of the largest growers of perennial sage in Europe. The company has been growing sage on its own fields since 1914.

The range includes more than just sage tea

According to Bombastus, sage and catch crops for soil regeneration are grown alternately on 40 hectares of land. This year, sage is grown on ten hectares. The focus is on tea production. In addition, the product range is broad and includes medicinal products, pharmaceutical raw materials, oral and skin care products as well as essential oils and fragrance essences.

The sage leaves are processed in a 600 square meter hall on the edge of the fields. Here, the sage leaves are moved by conveyor belts over several levels for two days with a supply of tempered air. This is followed by post-drying. The leaves are separated from the stems during the winnowing process. Before bottling, each batch is tested in the laboratory.
