The growing volume of heavy goods traffic in particular has taken its toll on the Mulde bridge on highway 14. Construction work for the new bridge is currently underway. It should be completed by 2028.

After decades of wear and tear, the new construction of the Mulde bridge on the highway 14 (Dresden-Magdeburg) is being driven forward. A new structure is currently being built near Grimma (Leipzig district) to accommodate all traffic while the old bridge is being demolished, according to Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH (Deges). The piers and abutments have already been completed and the third of seven shifts of the steel superstructure is now taking place.

The old Mulde bridge was built in the early 1970s. Its condition has reportedly deteriorated significantly, mainly due to the increase in traffic - especially trucks. Construction of the new, 361-metre-long bridge began in October 2022 and is scheduled for completion in 2028. The costs are being borne by the federal government and are estimated at around 80 million euros. According to a traffic forecast, 45,700 vehicles will cross the new bridge every day in 2030.
