The Greens fail with a cycling campaign in the Saxon state parliament. They consider the conditions for cyclists in Saxony to be alarming and call for urgent action.

The Greens see themselves thwarted in their efforts to improve cycling in Saxony. Their motion for a "bicycle offensive" in the Free State failed in the state parliament. The CDU, SPD and AfD voted against it.

Greens: alarming situation for cycling in Saxony

"The situation for cycling in Saxony is alarming. Instead of finally working towards greater safety for cyclists, the minority coalition wants to make massive cuts to the construction of cycle paths," emphasized MP Katja Meier, former Saxon Minister of Justice.

Meier described the government's draft budget as a "devastating step backwards": "In 2025, the previous state funding is to be cut by 73 percent, in 2026 by as much as 79 percent. That is almost 20 million euros less per year. This means that no new cycle paths can be built, and many projects that have already been planned are in danger of ending up in the bin."

No safe and continuous cycle paths in many places

According to Meier, there is still a lack of safe and continuous cycle paths in many places in Saxony. A cycling campaign is therefore necessary to speed up the expansion and make cycling safer in Saxony. This applies to both cities and rural regions

"It is long overdue to make the cycling network in Saxony fit for the future. The CDU should finally take off its ideological blinkers and recognize the need for good, safe cycling conditions," said Meier. Saxony does not need less, but more money for cycle paths.

Fast cycle paths should connect centers

In addition to the expansion of a cycle path network by 2035, the Greens' motion also called for fast cycle paths between the centers of the Free State. Local authorities should be supported in the construction of parking garages and private individuals in the purchase of cargo bikes. Better links between cycling and local public transport were also called for.
