Construction work is underway on the Nossen-Meißen railroad line. This will enable freight trains to reach an important tank farm. And this also has consequences for passenger transport, which has been shut down for almost ten years.

Construction work is beginning on the Nossen-Meißen railroad line to maintain the infrastructure. Among other things, old concrete sleepers will be replaced and wooden beams replaced with plastic ones, as announced by the Ministry of Transport. The Free State is funding the measure with 1.7 million euros. The work is due to be completed in June next year.

The so-called maintenance investments are primarily intended to ensure that freight trains can continue to reach a strategically important tank farm in Bodenbach. However, they are also a basis for reactivating the Döbeln-Meißen line for passenger transport, according to the ministry. Preliminary planning is underway for this. Regional trains have not been running there since 2015.

Green Party MP Gerhard Liebscher called the start of the renovation measures a signal to the people in the region that everything is finally being done to preserve the line and make it passable again. The planned reactivation must now be pursued even more consistently.
