Leipzig University Hospital supplies premature babies with donated breast milk. But now there are gaps in the breast milk bank.

The University Hospital Leipzig (UKL) is urgently looking for women who can donate breast milk. According to the UKL, there are currently some gaps in the breast milk bank's supply. The milk is primarily needed to supply premature babies who cannot yet be breastfed. In principle, any healthy woman who can provide more milk than her own child needs is eligible to donate.

The UKL's women's milk bank has existed since 1951, making it one of the oldest facilities. Last year, 51 women donated a total of 622 liters of milk. This was used to supply 58 particularly small premature babies.

According to the Women's Milk Bank Initiative, there is now at least one such facility in every German state. Most recently, a women's milk bank opened in Mainz in Rhineland-Palatinate in July.
