Home cooking is popular in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, according to a survey by the health insurance provider Techniker Krankenkasse (TK). Almost half (49 percent) of people would prefer it daily or several times a week, the TK announced on Friday in Dresden. In Berlin and Brandenburg, on the other hand, this only applies to around one in three (31 percent), and the national average is 44 percent.
According to the survey, 84 percent of Saxons, Thuringians and Saxony-Anhalt residents eat meat regularly (nationwide: 78 percent). Eleven percent consider themselves flexitarians (nationwide: 17 percent), for whom meat is only rarely on the table. Just under one in three (29%) admitted to being overweight. Diseases caused by lifestyle have been on the rise for years, explained Krauß. That is why it is important to eat a healthy and balanced diet. According to the analysis, 69 percent of people in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia eat fresh fruit and vegetables every day (nationwide: 59 percent).
Krauß also gave an insight into a culinary custom in his home region, the Erzgebirge. A typical Christmas meal there is the "Neinerlaa" (nine dishes). Each of the nine dishes has a certain symbolism for the New Year. According to old custom, the meat - which can vary between goose, turkey or rabbit - is said to bring good luck. Sauerkraut stands for health and a good harvest, bratwurst for strength and cordiality. Green dumplings are said to promise prosperity.
