Spring is coming, the flu is leaving. The health authorities are registering a significant decrease in influenza cases in Saxony. But the level is still comparatively high.

The flu epidemic in Saxony continues to weaken. For the 10th calendar week (March 3 to 9), the responsible state research institute reported 2,841 reported influenza cases, a significant decrease (minus 31 percent) in the number of cases compared to the previous week. Just over half (51 percent) of the reported cases were caused by influenza B viruses, according to the Ministry of Health.

114 deaths so far due to flu epidemic in Saxony

"Infections are being registered in all age groups, with the disease burden currently being particularly high among younger schoolchildren and adults," it said. In the current flu season, 114 patients between the ages of 8 and 99 have died so far, the vast majority of them elderly people.

"The activity of acute respiratory illnesses (ARE) is now declining after several weeks at a high level. The events continue to be determined by a high circulation of influenza viruses," is the conclusion of the health authorities.

RSV infections also on the decline

The number of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) infections, which mainly affect young children, fell by 1.5 percent to 572 cases compared to the previous week. Three deaths have been recorded so far in the reporting season - three women aged between 75 and 92.

Coronavirus case numbers fall

The number of reported coronavirus infections (SARS-CoV-2) also fell by 17% compared to the previous week, with 91 cases reported. Covid-19 affects older adults and senior citizens the most. Since October 2024, 210 patients between the ages of 46 and 97 have reportedly died from the disease.

In Saxony, only those coronavirus victims are included in the statistics for whom doctors list Covid-19 as the cause of death in the death certificate. No cases are counted in which people died of cardiovascular disease, for example, and were also infected with SARS-CoV-2 at the time. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 17,752 people have died from Covid-19 in Saxony.
