The tourism industry in Lower Saxony has continued to recover from the effects of coronavirus, according to statistics. The number of guests increased by around ten percent to more than 15 million in 2023, as announced by the Lower Saxony Statistical Office (LSN) on Friday. However, the level of the pre-coronavirus year 2019 has not yet been reached again. A total of 380,000 fewer guests came in 2023 than in 2019, a drop of 2.5 percent.
With just under 45.7 million overnight stays last year, the result from 2022 was exceeded by 5.6 percent. Compared to the previous record year of 2019 with more than 46.2 million overnight stays, this was around 550,000 fewer overnight stays.
The most overnight stays in Lower Saxony were recorded on the North Sea coast with more than eight million and in the Lüneburg Heath with just under seven million, according to the State Statistical Office. The highest percentage increases compared to 2022 were recorded in the Braunschweig region with an increase of around 17 percent, or around 1.8 million overnight stays, and the Weserbergland region with an increase of more than 12 percent and around 2.6 million overnight stays.
The number of guests in Lower Saxony also increased by more than 12 percent last December compared to 2022. According to the statisticians, a total of more than 832,000 guests arrived. The number of overnight stays booked rose to more than 2.2 million, an increase of 9 percent.
