Record number of visitors to the museums of the city of Dresden

The museums of the city of Dresden counted around 226,000 guests in 2023, setting a new visitor record. In the previous year, the figure was around 184,000. All but two of the ten museums in the network were able to increase their visitor numbers, as the museums announced on Friday. The Technical Collections recorded the highest number of visitors since it was founded, with a good 118,000. There were also increases in the Städtische Galerie (56 percent), the Stadtmuseum (23 percent) and the Kügelgenhaus (48 percent), among others. The smallest institution of the museum association - the Schillerhäuschen - was visited by exactly 1139 people.

"These successes are largely the result of the appealing and varied exhibition program, the events, museum festivals and numerous educational and mediation offers," it said. The special funds from the federal government, with which the museums were able to realize a major offensive in communication, also helped. Mayor of Culture Annekatrin Klepsch (Left Party) described the museums as an "important place of identification" for many people in Dresden.

The highlights announced by the municipal museums this year include the exhibition by Jewish artist Irena Rüther-Rabinowicz in the Municipal Gallery. The Technical Collections want to develop an escape room together with a cluster of excellence at Dresden University of Technology that deals with quantum materials. In collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, the Kunsthaus is presenting "Techno Worlds" - a show about forms of club and youth culture.
