The Grassi Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a weekend of festivities. Among other things, new acquisitions by Bauhaus pioneers and Henri Matisse will be presented, as a spokeswoman announced on Wednesday. In addition, theater star Robert Wilson will present a theatrical exhibition of designer chairs.
The museum is one of Europe's leading houses for design and applied arts. Changing exhibitions on arts and crafts and design, photography and architecture are on display. Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) and Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) are expected to attend this Friday's ceremony.
On Saturday (May 25), there will be short guided tours of the exhibitions, music and a poetry slam. On Sunday, six interactive time stations spanning 150 years will provide insights into particularly important steps in the development of art and craftsmanship since the museum was founded. In addition, various craftspeople will be demonstrating their skills and children will be able to try their hand at stone carving, blacksmithing, glass blowing or pottery. Admission to all activities is free.
