Hundreds of events are taking place in Saxony as part of the first nationwide Night of Libraries. In the state capital alone, nine institutions at 14 locations are taking part, including the Saxon State Library - State and University Library (SLUB) and the Art Library of the Dresden State Art Collections in addition to the municipal libraries, according to the SLUB.
According to the state association of the German Library Association (DBV), 119 libraries throughout Saxony are taking part in the Night of Libraries with over 300 events. The program includes various offers such as a library raffle, flea markets and concerts. In many places, visitors can try out games or discover new hobbies at workshops. There are also many events for children in the program, so in some places cuddly toys can spend the night in the libraries and tell their owners about their adventures afterwards.
The first Night of the Libraries took place in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2005, according to the DBV. From year to year, other federal states and libraries from Denmark, Belgium and South Tyrol joined in. From 2025, the Night of the Libraries is to take place every two years throughout Germany.
