Dresden expects up to 2200 more refugees this year

Dresden is expecting up to 2,200 more refugees this year. "According to a current forecast, there is enough capacity for at least the next six months," the city hall announced on Wednesday. However, events need to be monitored closely. Six areas with residential containers have already been put into operation this year. They will provide temporary accommodation for up to 505 people. Ten new apartments for 32 refugees have also been acquired in the Lockwitz district, it said. Another dormitory based on containers for a maximum of 82 people is currently being set up. Once work on the former City-Herberge has been completed, 280 places are expected to be available there by the end of the year.

Dresden currently has 4427 refugees in accommodation in the city. Volunteers are also needed to look after them. In January and February, the state directorate assigned 235 asylum seekers to the city. The majority of them came from Venezuela and Syria. There were also 117 refugees from Ukraine. 63 percent of the places for refugees were allocated to apartments and 37 percent to hostels. "The city administration is thus fulfilling the city council's requirement that at least two thirds of refugees should be housed decentrally. Families, single women and particularly vulnerable refugees are primarily housed decentrally, while single asylum seekers are generally housed in hostels."
