Millions of people with health insurance in Saxony and Thuringia will have to dig deeper into their pockets from 2025. AOK Plus is raising its contributions.

Policyholders of the health insurance company AOK Plus in Saxony and Thuringia will have to pay higher contributions. This was announced by the health insurance company. The board of directors of the largest statutory health insurance fund in both federal states voted in favor of an additional contribution rate of 3.1 percent from January 1, 2025. The general contribution rate will then rise to 17.7 percent. The fund has a budget volume of 17.8 billion euros for healthcare in both federal states.

The increase was justified by the continuing rise in healthcare expenditure, coupled with a lack of political will to sustainably stabilize the statutory health insurance system. However, the Chairman of the Administrative Board, Sven Nobereit, emphasized that no cuts would be made to benefits.

The highest expenditure was reported to be on hospital treatment (4.97 billion euros), medicines (2.71 billion euros) and medical treatment (2.24 billion euros).

According to its own figures, AOK Plus insures around 3.5 million people, more than 57 percent of all people with statutory health insurance in Saxony and Thuringia.
