The CDU/CSU, SPD and Greens want to amend the constitution to allow more debt for investments. The AfD parliamentary groups in Saxony want to prevent this.

The AfD parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament wants a special plenary session on the plans for a multi-billion euro financial package by the CDU/CSU, SPD and Greens in the federal government. "The way in which the CDU and SPD want to obtain hundreds of billions of euros in additional money is completely unacceptable," said Jörg Urban, head of the AfD parliamentary group in Saxony, in a statement.

In its motion for the special plenary session, the AfD parliamentary group demands that the Saxon government reject the financial package in the Bundesrat and work to ensure that no resolution is passed there. The AfD in Saxony is classified by the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a confirmed right-wing extremist party and is under observation. The AfD parliamentary group in Thuringia has also requested a special plenary session.

This is what the financial package envisages

The CDU/CSU, SPD and Greens want the Basic Law to be amended in several places:

  • Expenditure on defense, civil protection, intelligence services and cyber security should only fall under the debt brake up to a limit of one percent of gross domestic product. Anything above this can be paid for from loans.
  • The federal states are to be given more leeway to take on their own debt.
  • A special fund for investments in infrastructure and climate neutrality amounting to 500 billion euros is to be enshrined in the Basic Law. The federal states are to receive 100 billion euros.

The Bundestag will vote on the package on Tuesday. The vote in the Bundesrat will follow on Friday.

Urban criticizes Merz

Friedrich Merz (CDU) is ignoring the majority conditions that came about as a result of the last federal election. Urban also accused the CDU federal chairman of electoral fraud because he had promised to adhere to the debt brake before the election.
