In the course of the Bundestag elections, unknown persons have tampered with a postal ballot box in Torgau (district of North Saxony). The box had been opened illegally, the town council announced. It has filed criminal charges against persons unknown. It is now investigating whether any ballot papers are missing. In addition, security measures have been tightened.
According to the information, the city administration has been issuing postal voting documents since Tuesday. Citizens have the opportunity to cast their vote directly on site. A voting booth and ballot box were set up at the registry office for this purpose. It was locked and connected, but was not under constant supervision, according to the city. On Tuesday afternoon, the citizens' office was informed that the box was no longer locked.
The city responded to the incident: The urn is now under permanent surveillance in the citizens' office. "Access by unauthorized persons is no longer possible," assured a spokeswoman.
