Following its success in the federal elections, Saxony's AfD is seeking talks with the CDU and is continuing to work on tearing down the firewall. "The executive boards of the Saxon AfD and the Saxon CDU must discuss the future of our Free State responsibly and without any firewalls. That is the unequivocal mandate of our citizens," wrote AfD General Secretary Jan Zwerg in an open letter to his CDU counterpart Tom Unger.
The AfD won the parliamentary elections in Saxony by a clear margin. The party, which has been classified as right-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in the Free State of Saxony, received 37.3 percent of the second votes, leaving the CDU behind with 19.7 percent. It also won all but one of the direct mandates.
In the state election in Saxony on September 1, 2024, the CDU won 31.9% of the second votes, just ahead of the AfD (30.6%). The CDU has decided at federal and state level not to work with either the AfD or the Left Party.
In the opinion of the AfD, the vote in the state election was clear: "Only the CDU and AfD can form a stable government," emphasized Zwerg. However, he failed to mention that the CDU, SPD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) could have formed a joint majority government in the Free State. However, the BSW dropped out during the exploratory phase due to differences in content, meaning that the CDU and SPD formed a minority government. They are ten votes short of a majority in the state parliament.
