The city of Leipzig is hoping that the Galeria Kaufhof store in Leipzig will survive. A closure would be a great loss for the city center, the city administration announced on request. The store is the last large department store with a full range of goods in Leipzig. In addition, many employees would lose their jobs. The city is therefore hoping for relief in the form of a change of ownership.
The department store chain filed for insolvency again at Essen District Court last week. Galeria, which currently belongs to the Signa Group, is looking for a new owner. Talks with potential investors have already begun, it was reported. The aim is to continue Galeria.
The city of Leipzig has also been in talks with the local management and the Group management in Essen for months in order to develop the location. "The people of Leipzig love shopping in the city center," said a spokeswoman. However, shopping alone will no longer be enough in the future. Other experiences and varied offers are needed. Young people in particular want a mix of retail, gastronomy, events, education, art and culture as well as a public space to meet up.
According to a survey, Leipzig's city center is nevertheless doing well in a nationwide comparison. More than 95 percent of Leipzig residents and visitors would recommend the city center to their friends and acquaintances. The attractiveness of the city center has also improved for the majority of citizens.
