From November, the Self-Determination Act comes into force, which makes it much easier to change gender registration. Interest is particularly high in one city in Bavaria.

Before the start of the self-determination law today, more than a thousand people in Saxony's major cities have already registered to change their gender entry. By far the most registrations were in Leipzig. There, 676 people want to change their gender entry, according to the city (as of October 28). The figure is less than half in Dresden, where 292 applications had been received by Tuesday, according to the city. In addition, there are 77 registrations in Chemnitz.

Self-determination law applies from November 1

From November 1, it will be possible to change the gender entry and first name without the previously required expert opinions, medical certificates or court orders. A declaration to the registry office is sufficient. The simplifications mainly affect transgender, intersex and non-binary people. The change must be registered at the registry office three months before the date. Applications can be submitted since August.

First name must correspond to gender

The city of Leipzig pointed out the requirements for changing the first name. Anyone who chooses male or female as their gender must therefore choose a matching or ambivalent name. In the case of a diverse or deleted gender, the previous name can be retained, freely chosen or ambivalent.

The self-determination law was passed by the Bundestag in April. It replaced the previous Transsexuals Act. The Federal Constitutional Court had repeatedly declared parts of the previous legal situation unconstitutional and pointed out the humiliating situation for those affected.
