Contrary to the national trend, significantly less was donated in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia in 2024 than in the previous year. Together, they donated 292 million euros, 12 percent less than in 2023, according to the "Bilanz des Helfens 2024" report published by the German Donations Council. Across Germany, there was an increase of two percent to a total of 5.1 billion euros. In the three south-eastern federal states, 24 euros were given per donation, compared to 28 euros in the previous year. Nationwide, the value increased from 40 to 43 euros.
The "Balance of Helping" survey is carried out by YouGov CP Germany GmbH on behalf of the German Donations Council. According to the information provided, it is based on written surveys of a representative sample of 10,000 panel participants. Data on the donation behavior of private consumers in Germany is collected on an ongoing basis. This includes donation volumes, donation amounts and preferred areas of activity. According to its own information, the German Donations Council is a non-profit umbrella organization of 73 charitable organizations that collect donations.
The most recent survey showed that in 2024, less was donated nationwide for emergency and disaster relief and more for church organizations. Regional and national projects received more support than international aid measures.
