The number of social housing units in Saxony rose by 452 to just under 13,000 last year. However, the demand is far higher. In a survey, local authorities reported a need for a good 11,000 additional social housing units. At 10,000, the shortage is by far the greatest in Dresden, according to the Ministry of Regional Development's response to a question from Left Party MP Juliane Nagel.
"The balance of social housing construction in Saxony, which has only been taking place again for six years, is poor," Nagel summed up in a statement on Sunday. "Particularly with regard to Dresden, it is clear that the funding conditions are deficient." Unlike Dresden, Leipzig can make up for deficits on its own with a stable municipal housing company. According to the ministry, 433 social housing units were completed in Leipzig in 2023, compared to just 79 in Dresden.
