German champions SC Magdeburg have celebrated another home win in the German Handball League. The team from the Elbe city won 37:28 (21:15) against VfL Gummersbach in their own arena. Manuel Zehnder was the best SCM scorer with twelve goals.
The SCM's bad luck with injuries continued: Oscar Bergendahl (2) twisted his ankle after a defensive action and left the court on a stretcher - just like Omar Ingi Magnusson in Magdeburg's last home game.
The joy at the return of the long-term injured Philipp Weber and Tim Hornke was correspondingly muted. Both visibly revitalized the attacking play and Magdeburg pulled away with a 4:0 run (9:5/10th minute). After a dynamic opening spell, the game calmed down somewhat, but Magdeburg always had the advantage when it picked up the pace and was clearly ahead at the break.
After the break, Gummersbach reduced the deficit because the SCM was not consistent enough in finishing (25:21/37). As soon as the SCM picked up the pace, the lead grew again. Manuel Zehnder and goalkeeper Nikola Portner in particular kept the champions on course in this spell. In the end, the visitors, who started with just twelve outfield players, had to pay tribute to the loss of strength and were unable to close the gap.
