Defending champions SC Magdeburg put in a strong performance in the German Handball League. The SCM won comfortably 36:25 (18:10) at the Rhein-Neckar Löwen. Philipp Weber was the top scorer with seven goals. Magdeburg is still seven points off the pace, three more than leaders MT Melsungen.
The Magdeburg club went into the away game without Oscar Bergendahl, who will probably miss months with his foot injury. In a hectic opening phase, both teams lacked concentration in finishing. Magdeburg found its feet first and pulled away to 8:5. The visitors had clear advantages in goalkeeping and benefited from the recovered Weber and his ideas in attack. The champions piled on the pressure and led by a clear 18:10 at the break.
Goalkeeper Hernandez with 15 saves
The club in green and red needed a moment after the break to get back into the game, but the Lions - recent winners over Flensburg - were unable to take advantage. SCM now took more time for its attacks, let the clock run down a little and extended its lead to eleven goals. Even when Magdeburg made mistakes, goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez often saved free throws and ended up making 15 saves. The victory was therefore never in danger again.
