"Welcome to school" is the name of the latest multilingual brochure from the Department for Migration and Integration. It is aimed specifically at migrant parents whose children are new to the German school system. On the one hand, these are children of pre-school age who will be starting regular first grade in a few months, and on the other hand, children who are already older and will therefore be enrolled in correspondingly higher grades.
Ten-language support
The brochure is available in a total of ten languages: Arabic, Dari, German, English, French, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese. This enables parents to obtain comprehensive information in their native language and offers them initial orientation in the new education system.
An important milestone: starting school
Starting school is an important milestone in a child's life - and often raises many questions. This brochure provides parents with a compact overview of key issues relating to the education system in Germany and the school system in Leipzig in particular. Key topics include the school system in Germany and especially in Saxony, school registration, educational advice and language support, the transition from elementary school to secondary school, everyday school life and after-school care, responsibilities and contact persons as well as extracurricular support services.
A successful start to school
"A successful start to school is a crucial step for a successful educational biography," emphasizes Manuela Andrich, the Commissioner for Migration and Integration. "The structure and organization of our school system and extracurricular activities often differ from those in the countries of origin. With this brochure, we are meeting a great need for information and want to enable parents to arrive well in everyday school life and actively inform themselves about this complex topic."
Availability of the brochure
The "Welcome to School" brochure is being made available to numerous daycare centers and schools and is now available for download online at www.leipzig.de/integration → Education and Upbringing section.
