189 schools in Saxony are receiving special funding from the federal and state governments through the Startchancen program. A total of around 143.5 million euros is available for this over a period of ten years. "All children deserve the best possible educational opportunities. Together with the federal government, we are therefore investing specifically in schools that are facing particular challenges," explained Minister of Education Conrad Clemens (CDU).
Federal and state governments each provide one billion euros
The federal and state governments each provide one billion euros per year for the program. In Saxony, funding is concentrated on primary and secondary schools. The schools were selected on the basis of a scientifically sound selection process, which also included indicators such as high unemployment in the school's catchment area or a high proportion of children from immigrant families.
Programme based on three pillars
The program is divided into three pillars. The first pillar concerns equipping schools with learning labs and libraries, for example. So-called opportunity budgets (second pillar) are primarily aimed at providing additional learning support in German and mathematics. The third pillar concerns the strengthening of multi-professional teams. The "Fachbüro Startchancen" of the German Children and Youth Foundation helps with implementation.
