Strikes in Leipzig: impact on daycare centers and after-school care

There will be strikes in the public sector in Leipzig this week, which will have a significant impact on daycare centers and after-school care centers. Several trade unions, including the Saxon Educators' Association (SEV), have called on employees to walk off the job on Thursday and Friday. Protest actions and effects

The SEV is planning central protest actions in Leipzig. These will take place on Thursday between 10.30 am and 12 noon at the corner of Floßplatz and Paul-Gruner-Straße. Verdi has also announced nationwide strikes in hospitals and care facilities, although this will affect Leipzig less as many medical facilities are privatized.

Outlook for Friday

A stronger turnout is expected on Friday. Verdi is calling on public sector employees to strike. Although some facilities will continue to operate as normal, the city plans to announce closures and reduced services. A demonstration is planned for Friday, starting at 9.30 am on Richard-Wagner-Platz.

Background of the strike

The unions are demanding a pay rise of eight percent or at least 350 euros more per month, which the employers have so far rejected. The third round of collective bargaining will take place on March 14.
