For years, the derelict site of VEB Edelpelz near Leipzig was an eyesore. Now around 400 apartments are to be built there. There is a huge bang at the end of the demolition work.

A 42-metre-high chimney has been blown up on the former and dilapidated VEB Edelpelz in Schkeuditz near Leipzig. For a good two years, all the buildings have been demolished to make room for around 400 apartments, as the owner of the approximately 30,000 square meter site, Maxar AG from Berlin, announced. "The symbolic end of the demolition will be marked by the demolition of the 42-meter-high chimney," said CEO Mario Weißkopff. From 1897 to 1992, a precious fur refinery was operated there. After it was shut down, the site fell into disrepair.

The demolition work should be completed by Christmas. Much of the crushed concrete will remain on the site and will be used as recycled material under the future streets and houses of the planned residential area. Around 400 apartments are to be built here by 2026, where furs used to be made ready for sale for the Leipzig Trade Fair. The roads are to be built as early as mid-2025 and construction of the parking garage and the first shells will begin.
