The reconstruction of Prager Straße in Leipzig to promote environmentally friendly means of transportation will begin on April 7. It is expected to end in December 2025.

On April 7, 2023, the reconstruction of Prager Straße in Leipzig will begin. The section from An der Tabaksmühle to Friedhofsgärtnerei will be modernized and expanded by December 2025. The aim of this construction project is to promote environmentally friendly means of transportation such as buses, trains and bicycles and to increase safety in Leipzig's city traffic. The main part of the conversion is to increase the track spacing between the street An der Tabaksmühle and the cemetery nursery. In the future, wider streetcars of the new generation will run on these new, extended tracks.

The first week of the construction work will mainly be used for preparatory measures. During this time, detour routes and replacement stops will be set up. On Naunhofer Straße/Gletschersteinstraße, the crossing for the rail replacement service will also be constructed. Prager Straße will remain open to traffic until 4 a.m. on April 14. After that, Prager Straße and the An der Tabaksmühle junction will be closed, which will be carried out jointly by the City of Leipzig and Leipziger Gruppe.

There will be large-scale detour for motor vehicle traffic via Holzhäuser Straße or Connewitzer Straße, Probstheidaer Straße, Zwickauer Straße, Richard-Lehmann-Straße and An der Tabaksmühle. Cyclists will be diverted via the side streets. All traders and businesses will remain within walking distance, and pedestrians can cross the construction site at any time on signposted paths.

Tramp services in the construction area will be suspended for the period between April 14 and the end of 2023. This will result in changes to regular services, which will be implemented in several phases. Streetcar line 15, for example, will be rerouted from April 14 to May 16 due to additional track work on Naunhofer Straße. From May 17, streetcar lines 2 and 15 will terminate at the Naunhofer Straße terminus. Rail replacement services will be in operation and cover the route between Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and Liebertwolkwitz, including stops such as Technisches Rathaus, Südfriedhof, Probstheida and Meusdorf. Bus routes 70, 75, 76, 79, N8 and 690 will also be subject to adjustments and detour.

Detailed detour plans are available to interested parties on the City of Leipzig website at www.leipzig.de/prager-strasse. Information on changes to scheduled services is provided by Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe at www.L.de/prager.

The reconstruction of Prager Straße is an important part of the City of Leipzig's Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to strengthen environmentally friendly modes of transport. By modernizing this busy transport link, the city hopes to achieve a sustainable improvement in mobility and a more environmentally friendly transport infrastructure.
