It is the first Advent season in which the new cannabis law applies. No general regulation is planned for the Christmas markets in Saxony.

A state-wide ban on cannabis consumption at Christmas markets is not planned in Saxony. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, it is up to the local authorities to decide whether special regulations are necessary. These could decide independently on site.

According to the Cannabis Act, which has been in force since April, consumption in the immediate presence of minors and in pedestrian zones is prohibited from 7.00 am to 8.00 pm. A ban also applies to playgrounds, schools, sports facilities, children's and youth facilities and within sight of these areas - within 100 meters as the crow flies from the entrance area.

No additional regulations are planned for the Dresden Striezelmarkt and the other Christmas markets in the state capital, according to a city spokeswoman. This also applies to the markets in Leipzig and Chemnitz.

Christmas market in Torgau "cannabis-free zone"

The city council in Torgau had already decided on an explicit ban in September and declared the Christmas market there a "cannabis-free zone". The consumption, possession and distribution of cannabis products are therefore also prohibited after 8 pm. The regulation applies until 2028.

According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, the police and public order authorities are responsible for monitoring compliance with the regulations on no-consumption zones. The event organizer can carry out additional checks.
