Ukrainian refugees in Saxony still do not have to register their car from their home country in Germany. An exception to this rule has been extended until the end of September, as announced by the Ministry of Transport in Dresden on Thursday. This is in response to a request from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The regulation would actually have expired at the end of March.
Normally, cars must be registered in Germany at the latest when the vehicle has been in the country for one year after crossing the border. Under the exemption regulation, Ukrainians can continue to use their vehicles with their domestic registration, even if they have been living in Saxony with their vehicle for more than a year.
A high three-digit number of temporary exemptions from the obligation to transfer or register in Germany have been granted in the Free State to date.
