Study: Driving in Dresden and Leipzig is becoming less attractive

Driving in Leipzig and Dresden remains a challenge, according to a study. The average speed in Leipzig city center fell slightly to 23 kilometers per hour, according to an analysis of traffic patterns by mapping specialist TomTom. The travel time for a ten-kilometer route also increased to an average of 25 minutes and 43 seconds. The time lost due to traffic jams and traffic obstructions compared to an unhindered journey increases to 85 hours per year both in the morning and in the evening.

Only in Berlin and Frankfurt was the travel time for ten kilometers longer than in Leipzig. In terms of time lost due to traffic jams and traffic obstructions, Leipzig is even in second place. Only in Nuremberg is the percentage of time lost during the day even higher. Traffic congestion in Leipzig is particularly high on Thursdays between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., with a congestion level of 68 percent.

In Dresden, the average speed was 27 kilometers per hour and the average travel time for a ten-kilometer route was 21 minutes and 54 seconds. In a national comparison, Dresden ranks 9th in terms of travel time for ten kilometers in the city center and 7th in terms of time lost due to traffic jams and traffic obstructions.

London is the slowest city in Europe

For the "TomTom Traffic Index" for 2024, data from smartphones and fixed navigation systems was evaluated. It is estimated that every seventh car in Germany was involved in the data collection. TomTom evaluated data from around 600 million vehicles worldwide.

According to the study, London is the slowest city in Europe with an average speed of 18 kilometers per hour and a travel time for ten kilometers of over 33 minutes. Bucharest is the European city with the highest annual average level of congestion at 48 percent. The annual time lost by drivers here is around 150 hours.
