In a competition in the state parliament, pupils from grades 8 to 12 competed in the art of free speech. The best were chosen by a jury.

Saxony's best young speakers come from Dresden and Bautzen. Jakob Paridon from Dresden-Klotzsche grammar school and Nathalie Juhnke from Bautzen's Schiller grammar school took the top two places at the youth speech forum in the state parliament. They are 17 years old and are in the 12th grade, according to a spokesperson for the state parliament.

36 students in the speech competition

A total of 36 students from grades 8 to 12 took part in the free speech competition, according to the information provided. They debated topics such as compulsory military service, hatred and false reports on social media. Their performances were assessed by a jury in several rounds.

"A democratic state thrives on good debates and on engaging in tough but decent discussions with one another," said Alexander Dierks (CDU), President of the state parliament. He wished the students the self-confidence and courage to speak out and move things in their interests in democratic competition.
