After the partial collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden, individual ships should be able to pass under the structure again at the beginning of next year. To this end, the fairway in the Elbe is to be restored to a width of 30 to 50 meters by the end of January 2025, the city administration announced.
However, passage will only be possible for individual ships with special permission in a predetermined time window. The monitoring of the bridge sections that are still standing will be used for this purpose.
The Carola Bridge consisted of three traffic lines. The so-called Train C with a streetcar line collapsed over a length of around 100 meters on the night of 11 September. This section collapsed into the river. Since then, clearing and demolition work has been underway. The entire bridge C should be removed and the construction site cleared by the end of April next year.
The Elbe is currently not navigable for ships at this point. A general opening of the federal waterway for shipping traffic will also not be possible until further notice, according to the city administration.
