Dirk Neubauer is the only one of Saxony's current district councillors who did not come into office on a CDU ticket. Now he is resigning after just two years.

The district administrator of the district of Central Saxony, Dirk Neubauer (non-party), is resigning. In a personal statement on his social media channels on Tuesday, he justified the move primarily with personal hostility and a lack of opportunities to assert himself. His term of office would have run until 2029. Neubauer had recently indicated several times that he would not hold on to the post.

The trained journalist was elected in 2022 - as the only district administrator in Saxony who is not a member of the CDU or supported by the CDU/CSU. His candidacy was supported by the SPD, the Left Party and the Greens.

Neubauer had previously announced his withdrawal in an MDR report on bureaucratic confusion. In it, he also spoke about growing aggression towards politicians. "They only come into danger in this country when they want something. Not when they don't want anything," he said.

Lack of majorities in parliaments

However, he can deal with his personal security situation. "What I can't deal with is not getting majorities for sensible things in district and local parliaments just because they are difficult," said Neubauer. He believes that it is more efficient to influence the system from the outside.

Before his work as district administrator, Neubauer had been mayor of the small town of Augustusburg since 2013. He was a member of the SPD for several years, but resigned before the last general election. On his Facebook channel a few days ago, he had already hinted at a new project - a consultancy firm.
