The Left Party in the state parliament wants to make May 8 a day of remembrance on the anniversary of the end of the war in 1945. They introduced a bill to this effect at the last session of parliament this year. The motion was referred to the main committee of the state parliament for further consideration.
"As the 'Day of Liberation from National Socialism and War', May 8 should become a national day of remembrance and mourning alongside the National Day of Mourning and the Sunday of the Dead," they said.
"In other countries, terrible wars are raging again, robbing innocent people of their lives and entire peoples of their future. In times like these, we believe it is absolutely necessary to keep the memory of the horrors of fascism and war alive," said Left Party parliamentary group leader Susanne Schaper.
