State parliament passes law on integration and participation

Saxony wants to make it easier for migrants to settle into their new home. On Thursday, the state parliament in Dresden passed an integration and participation law. Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) spoke of a milestone on the way to a society that values and promotes the diversity of its members. "We are sending a strong signal to all integration stakeholders in the Free State of Saxony, but also to the outside world." The aim is to break down barriers, overcome prejudices and strengthen social cohesion.

The law aims to improve equal and comprehensive participation in social, economic and cultural life for people with foreign roots. At the same time, it requires migrants to make a contribution of their own, above all by making efforts to learn German and secure their livelihood. "The law stands for diversity, cosmopolitanism and modernity," emphasized Köpping. There will also be a tailwind for the integration of skilled workers and employees.

The law describes integration as a joint task of the state, the districts and independent cities. The Commissioner for Foreigners will become the Commissioner for Integration. The authorities are required to increase the proportion of employees from other countries when recruiting staff. Job advertisements should state that applications from people with a migration background are expressly welcome.
