Saxony's medical profession grew by almost 500 working doctors last year. According to the Saxon State Medical Association, 20,180 of the 27,724 doctors living in the state were practising at the end of 2024 - 487 more than a year earlier.
Almost 11,500 work in the inpatient sector, a good 7,600 in the outpatient sector and 362 in public authorities. With 11,034 working female doctors and 9,146 practising doctors, the proportion of women is around 54.7 percent.
More employed than with their own practice
According to the figures, the number of doctors with their own practice fell from 5,442 to 4,846 compared to 2015, a decrease of more than ten percent, while the number of employed doctors has been increasing for years. In 2024, there was an increase of almost 300 to a total of 2,790.
Chamber President Erik Bodendieck understands the need to reconcile work and family life and the desire for predictable and manageable working hours. "But I am concerned about the difficulty of filling vacant practices in rural areas."
Foreign doctors provide indispensable support
According to Bodendieck, the influx of foreign doctors is continuing and is securing care in many facilities. There are 3,486 foreign doctors from 109 nations registered with the State Medical Association, most of whom come from Syria and Eastern European countries from Bulgaria to Ukraine. 2,690 of them work in inpatient care, 441 in outpatient care and 113 in other facilities. The proportion of foreigners in the medical profession is 17.3 percent.
