Leipzig has by far the highest number of veterinarians in Saxony. As of December 31, 2023, there were 475 veterinarians, including 140 in private practice, i.e. with their own practice or employed by a practice, according to the State Statistical Office on Friday. 335 veterinarians work in veterinary administration, research, teaching and industry (primarily in the pharmaceutical industry). Leipzig is followed by Dresden with 167 veterinarians, 85 of whom are in private practice, and the district of Leipzig with a further 139, 117 of whom are in private practice. The fewest veterinarians were in Chemnitz (55), the Vogtland district (59) and the district of Görlitz (64).
1542 veterinarians were working in the Free State on the reporting date, around 70 more than a year earlier (1473). Of these, 946 practiced in branch offices. The proportion of women has risen from 48 to almost 66 percent over the past ten years. Conversely, the proportion of men fell by 22 percent during this time.
