Volkswagen is planning to discontinue vehicle production at the Transparent Factory in Dresden, according to a report in Automobilwoche. The site is to be retained, however, and the roughly 300 employees will be given other tasks, the business newspaper reported, citing company sources. Since the beginning of 2021, the e-car ID.3 is manufactured in Dresden.
A VW spokesman said on Sunday on request that the company does not participate in speculation. "The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is currently working out a detailed package of measures to implement a performance program, with an open mind. The aim is to further increase global competitiveness and counter the volatile market situation." He added, however, that the site-independent agreement on safeguarding employment until 2029 remains unchanged.
The Transparent Factory was put into operation in 2002. Initially, Phaetons were built there, followed later by Bentleys, the electric Golf and finally the ID.3. In the spring of this year, the 150,000th vehicle rolled off the production line in Dresden.
Last week, it had already become known that VW was cutting jobs in Zwickau because of weakening e-car demand. 269 temporary contracts, which will soon expire after one year, will not be extended. According to "Automobilwoche," more temporary jobs are uncertain over the next three years.
