In the "Blitz for Kids" road safety campaign, 1,612 drivers were caught speeding in front of elementary school. In 160 cases, the speeding was so high that a fine was imposed, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
In total, the speed of 18,239 vehicles was measured during the two-week campaign, with almost one in eleven speeding.
"Anyone who drives too fast on the way to school is putting children's lives at risk," warned Interior Minister Armin Schuster according to the press release. It is particularly important to protect the youngest children on the roads.
Together with schoolchildren, the police monitored traffic in front of elementary school in Saxony from March 31. In the first week, yellow cards were handed out to drivers who were speeding. Pupils were also given a warning. "Children often achieve more with praise and criticism than we adults do," says Schuster. In the second week, all violations were punished.
"Blitz for Kids" since 1995
The road safety campaign has been held annually since 1995. Together with ADAC Saxony, it aims to draw attention to the special protection of 6 to 15-year-olds on the way to school and during leisure time and to remind them to be particularly careful and considerate.
