Vehicle registration at the click of a mouse is supposed to save on visits to the authorities and costs - but the full service is not yet available everywhere in Saxony. In the districts of Görlitz, Central Saxony, North Saxony, the Ore Mountains and Vogtland, the current i-KfZ level 4 has not yet been set up, according to a survey of the districts and independent towns. The reason for this is mostly restrictions due to the safety requirements specified by the Federal Motor Transport Authority. However, the current version is reportedly planned for the coming year. With level 4, day registrations, initial registrations, transfers, re-registrations and decommissioning are possible online, among other things.
Technology still vulnerable in some areas
The technology is very vulnerable, meaning that technical faults occur time and again, according to the Leipzig district office in Borna. It is also a major challenge for citizens to complete the registration process themselves via i-Kfz. Citizens often start the process online without reading the instructions beforehand. It is easier to deregister a car or change an address.
Usage figures have multiplied
In the city of Leipzig, usage figures have tripled compared to level 3, according to a city spokesperson. However, due to the 1:1 mapping of the analog process into the digital world, the registration authorities are experiencing increased costs. In the district of Zwickau, applications by mouse click have increased more than tenfold within a year.
In Dresden, on the other hand, the number of registration processes is still very low. This is where the decommissioning service is used most frequently. The same applies to the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge. In the current calendar year, more than 95 percent of all i-Kfz processes were decommissioning, according to an inquiry.
Online registration saves money
According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the online service is most frequently used to decommission vehicles or to make name and address changes. This not only saves car owners time, but also money. This is because the fees for vehicle registration at the click of a mouse are lower than at the counter, it said. Registering a car online costs 16.30 euros, compared to 30.60 euros at the counter; deregistering a car online costs 2.70 euros compared to 16.80 euros.
