Distribution of educational recommendations in Saxony settles at pre-corona level

According to the Ministry of Education, the distribution of educational recommendations in Saxony is returning to pre-corona levels. Around half of the almost 32,700 educational recommendations were issued for grammar schools, the Ministry of Education announced in Dresden on Thursday. Accordingly, 51 percent (16,700 pupils) received a recommendation for grammar school. In the previous school year, the figure was 51.2 percent.

A recommendation for secondary school was given to 49 percent (16,067 pupils). A year earlier, the figure was 48.8 percent. This means that around three percent of primary school pupils who are taught in classes for people with German as a second language (DAZ) or in inclusive classes with different learning goals did not receive an educational recommendation.

During the coronavirus pandemic, significantly more pupils received a secondary school recommendation. During this time, particular emphasis is said to have been placed on teaching the core subjects of German, mathematics and general studies, partly because these subjects are relevant for the educational recommendation. According to the Ministry of Education, in cases of doubt, the emphasis on performance was sometimes also placed in favor of the pupils during this phase.

Before the coronavirus pandemic in 2019 and 2020, the percentage of primary school pupils who had received an educational recommendation for grammar school was 48%. 51 percent received a recommendation for secondary school.
