For first-graders in particular, the journey to school often poses a safety risk. This is also shown by a large-scale control campaign at the start of school. Many vehicles are traveling too fast.

In Saxony, 3,485 traffic violations have been recorded since the start of the new school year - most of them in the vicinity of elementary school. This means that the number is at a similar level to the previous year, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

In most cases (2,442), the vehicles checked were traveling too fast. The police also counted 109 violations of the obligation to wear seat belts for children in cars.

From the first day of school on August 5 to August 23, a total of 1,394 checkpoints were set up in the state, most of them near elementary school. The Saxon police and the state association of the Saxon transport industry want to ensure greater safety for schoolchildren with this control campaign, which has been running for more than 20 years.

Every fifth accident involves children and young people

In 2023, 188 people were killed and 3,411 seriously injured in road accidents in the Free State of Saxony. In the first half of 2024, there were already 74 road deaths, 1,723 serious injuries and 6,388 minor injuries. Around one in five accidents involving pedestrians involves children and young people.

The police recommend that parents of first-graders in particular explore the route to school together with their children and identify potential dangers.
